Obituary of Richard M. Onofry

Richard Michael Onofry, 76, died peacefully at home on March 25^th. Dick was born in Port Jervis to Dorothy and Richard L. Onofry.

Dick worked at O&R Utilities as an economist, then becoming a CFP, he started Onofry Financial Services and retired from there.

Dick was always active in the community, coaching basketball, baseball and youth soccer. He loved his hometown and described his most cherished memories in “Finding Lost Marbles”, the book he co-authored with his sister Peg.

Dick was a member of Goodwill Presbyterian Church where he served as elder and helped get the Port Jervis branch off the ground. He also helped start Grace Fellowship Church in Port Jervis.

Dick enjoyed sports of all kinds: hiking, basketball, swimming, softball and watching New York teams.

He loved his family most of all and enjoyed coaching his children in various sports. Family vacations provided great memories.

Missing Dick is Lynda, his wife of forty-five years, his sons Scott and his wife Christina of Maybrook, NY, Craig and his wife Courtney of Montague, NJ, his daughter Megan and her partner Katie of Statesboro, GA. “Grandpa” adored grandchildren Allison, Rebecca, Bryce, Ethan and Cypress.

Dick was the oldest of nine. Surviving are brothers Robert and his wife Linda, William and his wife Susan, Craig and his wife Christine, Charles and his wife Jackie and sisters, Peg, Suzanne and Kim, sister-in-law Pat DeMono and her husband Robert. Dick was predeceased by his sister Robyn and brothers-in-law David Aber and Robert Boyd. Many nieces and nephews have fond memories of “Uncle Dick”. 

The family would like to thank Dick’s compassionate hospice nurses. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Dick's memory to the Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550 or to Goodwill Church 170 West Main Street, Port Jervis, NY 12771.

Friends will be received by the family at Goodwill Church Port Jervis from 9-11 on Saturday March 30^th. Pastor Jose Rodriguez will lead a Celebration of Dick’s life at 11:00 at the church. Arrangements by Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 East Main Street, Port Jervis, NY.
