Obituary of John Kurtick

John Kurtick, a longtime resident of Sparrow Bush, died peacefully on February 28, 2024.  He was 89. 

The son of the late John & Mary Kurtick he was born on November 2, 1934 in Berwick, PA. 

After graduating high school John attended The University of Alabama obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Physics.  He then went on to Bloomsburg State College where he received his Teaching Certification and finally to Marywood College for his Master’s Degree.  He had a long tenured career as a science teacher, starting with Monroeville in Ohio, then relocating to the area working and retiring after 32 years from Port Jervis High School.  

John was an educated man who was able to apply his intellect to the creative ability of carpentry, masonry work, electrical and plumbing.  He built his own home from the ground up and would utilize his gifts during his summer breaks in various projects.   He was an avid outdoorsman, hunting and most especially trout fishing.  John was a very devoted University of Alabama football fan, passing on the tradition to his family.  Roll Tide.

In addition to his parents John was predeceased in life by his wife of 55 years,  Lottie Kurtick.  

Devoted father of Theresa Loughney with her husband Joseph of Milford and Kathryn Helms and her husband Albert of Matamoras.  We would be remiss to not mention John’s cherished love of his four grandsons Scott Gillette his wife Lauren, Leland Helms, Joseph Loughney III and Lucas Helms.  Dear brother of Mary Sitler her husband Donald of Berwick, PA.  Uncle to Todd Sitler and his wife Diane.   

A Funeral Mass will take place 10AM on Tuesday 3/5/24 at St. Joseph’s RC Church 309 Ave F Matamoras 18336 PA.
